A chimney should be inspected every year and cleaned every cord of wood you burn.
Common signs include smoke backing up into the house, or when you open the damper and a black, flour-like substance falls down.
Yes - but not all home inspectors know the true condition or integrity of a chimney the way a professional chimney sweep does. We recommend a dedicated chimney inspection.
Soot build-up and people burning paper in the fireplace. For gas fireplaces, using a gas tray or a log lighter is recommended.
Oak is generally the best. Ash, Hickory and Pecan are second best. Pine, Gum Tree and Cedar are softer and produce more creosote. Never burn Christmas trees - softwood is highly flammable.
